Ok, I looked for the 1st book (a game of thrones) several times at my local library and they never have it. The librarian is reading it on his Nook, lol!
So, I broke down and ordered the 1st four books on Amazon (for $23 - not a bad deal!)
I hope I did right...lol
I might have to get one of those nooks tho. It's just so darn convenient when traveling!

I have read the first 4 and liked them a lot. Still waiting with the 5th to come out...rumor now has it this will occur in 2011 but i am not holding my breath. There are a LOT of characters and plot lines, so use the handy character list in the back of the book to remember who is who. I think I'll have to read them again so i can remember how things stood at the end of book 4.
I just got a kindle as a gift! Have not had time to get it loaded with books yet, but I am looking forward to it!
eta: I bet Game of Thrones has a waiting list at your library. HBO is airing the series they produced for this book right now, so there is a lot of interest in the series.

I've read up through about 3/4 of the way through the 3rd one. I really like the story lines but the author seems to have gotten more and more verbose as the series. It got to the point that I realized that I was skipping more words than I was reading. Since I knew that I was going to have to wait for the next book anyway I just gave up on what I had at some point. The story is good enough that I'll definately go back and finish it at some point but I needed a break.

My husband loves this series and he's a very avid reader. He was drooling in anticipation of the TV version on HBO and made me watch it with him. I wasn't into the series and stopped watching. He kept at me, incessantly, about reading the books. The whole fantasy/sci-fi genre really isn't my favorite - but you know what? I read the first book, and quickly. (And I have no trouble abandoning books I can't get into.) And now I'm reading the second. I hear from some others the third is a real barnburner. I'm enjoying the series -it's good summer reading!

I read the 1st one and really liked it. I need to get my hands on the 2nd I just have been reading other series and haven't had time.
The HBO series was AWESOME. I was so impressed and happy with how they stuck closely to the story line.

I got the books but haven't started them yet because I got into R. Hobb's Farseer Trilogy...Thanks Elizabeth for recommending them. I really enjoyed them, especially the last book. Did you read her Tawny Fool trilogy, too?

I read all of them and I think I have them all if anyone wants me to send them? I also purchased the entire series on my Nook so I can send them and maybe you can pass them on to someone else? LMK

Niaru - Glad you liked Farseer Fitz is an unforgettable character. Yes, I have read the Tawny Man trilogy as well, but I would suggest reading Liveship Traders first. There are events in those books which take place between the timelines of Farseer and Tawny Man. Plus they are among her best books. She is also working on a third trilogy which takes place in the Rain Wilds. I have read the first 2 books and await the third! Love her stuff! So Dance with Dragons comes out tomorrow! Yay! But it's been so long since I read the first 4 that I can't remember where all the many plot lines left off. I guess I should re-read those so I am not totally lost in the 5th.

I'm such a nerd..bought the new book today. If it weren't for books and horses, I'd have a lot more money.
I second the Farseer, than Liveship Traders, than Tawny Fool. Besides the Rain Wilds trilogy, she also has the Soldier Son trilogy, which is good as well.

I love this series! I read through the first four in about a month, and just got the fifth one, tho I'm having trouble getting into it, but I could just be distracted by all the holiday season stuff... So, anyone have any theories on Jon Snow's parentage? I have one that's kind of off the wall...

Yes Liz, books and horses are my big budget killers as well! Plus DH gave me a Kindle Fire for my birthday, and the thing makes it WAY too easy to purchase ebooks!!!
I read all the books in the Song of Ice and Fire series this summer. Great stories and characters and now i can't wait for the next one! Bradford, let's hear your theory!
I want to see how HBO handled the first book in the series. But I don't have HBO and I can't find the series anywhere (Netflix et al). Whaaaa!

Niaru, I have a digital copy of the first season, I don't know if I can email them individually and have them work for you or not...but I'm sure they have the first season out in stores by now..
As for our mysterious Jon Snow, I don't think he is Ned Starks son at all, I believe he is actually Ned's sister Lyanna's son, fathered by Rhaegar Targaryan, as its made clear she didn't favor Robert, and was 'kidnapped' by Rhaegar for almost a year, after Rhaegar had looked past his own wife and crowned her 'Queen of Love and Beauty at a tourney. Her last words to Ned were also, "promise me Ned" which isn't made clear what he was promising, but I think it was to always take care of her son and hide who he actually was, right after she died Ned returns to Winterfell with 'Jon SNow'..I know there's tons of theories that all make sense, but I like that one the best!

Wow, that's a great theory! It never entered my mind! That would explain all the references to the tourney, and why it comes back into the story in book 5. Hmm...that would put quite a spin on some events in book 5. I may have to read that again with this possibility in mind.
