Just finished reading the 2010 Man Booker Prize winner. Wow. If you're into literary fiction, this is a tremendous read. It's based on the backstretch of a low level track.
And while it has a few sad moments it doesn't trade wholly in misery, in fact, the author finds considerable grace in "pifyfull" circumstances. And I found the ending to be satisfying.
Highly, highly recommended. I will add that it's not a read for kids, there are some racy references (though nothing gratuitous.)
(AdCooper, you will want to read this one. I too read (and loved) Out Stealing Horses) and while the language is completely different the writing is similarly evocative.)

Great! I'll look for it today. I just finished Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken, and I'm not happy with the Jeffrey Archer short stories I've been reading since then. I need another good one!

How was Unbroken, Ann? I've been considering that one.

Thea, I think you'll like it. She's SUCH a good storyteller. This one is based on a true story, as was Seabiscuit, and again she is a master of pacing, description and suspense. Even if you know the story and how it ends (which I did not) I bet you will be turning pages rapidly. Read it and tell me what you think.

Oh good, 2 more titles to add to my list. I am struggling to finish The Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All, I don't know why I'm having such a hard time with it. It's a good book, well written and funny, but it drags on and on and on...
I think I will read Horse Heaven again. lol

I'm about halfway through Misrule, JA. I'm getting worried about Medicine Ed. I hope he doesn't get beat up too badly in this story!

So what did you think of it, Ann?

I have to go back to it! I screeched to a halt and got distracted by another book, which I finished, in tears, last night. So...back to the barns, except you still haven't assured me that Ed comes through this thing in good shape. I'm worried about him shoeing horses while lying on the ground, for starters, and then there's that mean SOB who's playing games with the chestnuts and why would any woman put up with that creepiness.
