Are you sure he didn't have prior training? Looks like he could take some bigger jumps than the ones you have!

Yes, positive. He raced, then he was a western horse for awhile, then it seems he sat in a pasture and was forgotten about.
You didn't get to see him flinging his head everywhere and threatening to rear at first, but after a minute he settled in.
I think he could handle some bigger jumps definitely, but we didn't want to push him, just wanted to see what he thought of the idea. We had beginner jump lessons right before we tacked him up so the small jumps were up. He also has that greenie-I-have-to-jump-a-foot-higher-than-the-jump thing going on. The outside jumps are despooking jumps. They have carpet on them (fake liverpool-blue carpet), bright colored panels, flowers, stonewall, american flag jump, etc.

That's what we need in out 4H jumping classes. All these kids are taught to jump plain, white crossrails. Then when they go to the competitive shows they have brightly colored jumps and the "spooky" types and they forget how to jump.
I can see in the fourth photo that he is flying over that jump. Must have thought it was a bit higher than it actually was.

Just moving this up to see if anyone has any other opinions of this guy. I think he's pretty cute, but has withers from heck. Of course he is skinny and needs alot of muscling.

RC- Those despooking jumps are great, especially the carpet/liverpool. The bright flowers work pretty well too. I'm not sure if you guys have those $1 stores there, but they have aritificial flowers. We just buy a bag full every so often to change the colors up. You can just stick them in the ground if you don't have a flower box/pole. I'm considering making a flower chain and wrapping it around the poles to see if thay makes any difference to the horses.

Johnnie - well see, my trainer believed in those tys of jumps and then she brought in a riding school and that trainer painted almost all the crossrails white! So now my trainer is in the process of fixing her jumps back again.
As for the fake flowers, those are good way to decorate and "scary-up" the jumps. Actually, my Paint ate one once before I could tell him stop. You would think he'd know. He never wanted to eat flowers before.
As for the new guy, he is very cute. Does need some weight. Big withers, a little long in the back, but it looks like he has a good mind (ears to the rider), he looks like a nice project horse.
