I know how claiming races work and allowance races, but when it's posted as an allowance/claiming what does that mean?

They are usually listed as "Allowance/Optional Claiming."
When the trainer enters the horse into a race he will have the option of choosing to "take the weight" and run as if he were in an allowance race. Meaning he'll likely be carrying more weight than a horse that is entered as "claiming" in the same race. In the program it will be listed which horses in that race can be claimed. It just evens out the field so things are more fair in the race.
