I have a gift card (from X-mas) to purchase a Kindle, but I already have Kindle the app on my phone and laptop. Now I'm wondering if I really need a Kindle. If I don't purchase the Kindle, I could just use the card to buy "books", so it wouldnt' go to waste.
So, are Kindles really so OMG, I have to it, or would I be just fine reading on my laptop and phone?
Edited to add that yes, I have read on both laptop and phone through the Kindle app and didnt' have any issues.

I would thinnk that you really don't need a Kindle then RR. I had read somewhere that when Google comes out with their version of ebooks that they won't be compatible to kindles. Did you hear anything about it?

Oooh, I haven't heard anything about that, but I do read samples of books I'm interested in on Google sometimes. I wonder if that will be related somehow.

I'm not a big Kindle fan because you can't read library books on them! (You can on Kobo, Sony, Nook, and (soon) Ipad. Our library has a digital collection that is only going to get better in the next year or two, maybe yours does, too.

I have to admit that I don't really do library books. *shock* I know, bad me. When I worked at the library, I would pull books as they came in to read, but other than that I didn't really check anything out. It mostly has to do with the fact that I can never make it back to return anything on time or I forget about it and get nasty letters about overdue books. When I worked at the library that wasn't a concern, but now.... Also, sometimes I like to mark things, do odd things to pages, make notes, highlight stuff. It just depends on what sort of book it is and why I'm reading it. I can do all of those things on the Kindle ebooks, so it works out. *runs away to hide from Ad and Claire* lol

Well, you don't have to GO to the library to check out or return an e-book! Silly girl. Stop writing in your books. You should be using your hands to hold cookies and mugs of coffee while reading, not highlighters or pens. Silly girl.

And when I get them from the library I actually enjoy seeing that others before me have penciled in / underline a few things...although I try real hard not to do it in library books! Sometimes tho, there is a sentence that is so beautiful, or true, etc that i can't resist underlining it... Can you really do that easily with a kindle? That's great! I still don't have one. I really didn't see the appeal for me until I started reading Ken Follet's Fall of Giants (my neighbor lent it to me): it's a HUGE book (my daughters call it The Dictionary) and since I'm planning on reading it on the plane next week...a Kindle or similar apparatus would be great just for that!

If you get a Nook, they have a new program where you can outline, highlight and make notes in the margin and it IS electronic! You can get many of your texts in ebook now which I love as those things weigh a TON! lol So nice to be able to have these new features, especially for class!
