Several years ago my vet recommended I put my Perch/TB on high fat, low starch feed. I know it's become a trend now to keep fat high, starch low. This feeding concept makes sense to me and I prefer to avoid starchy calories. Our new barn feeds pennfield..a senior feed, or phase V feed which has pretty high NSC value at 41%. I'm inclined to go with the senior feed with a low NSC value of 15%. My only question is..this feed is geared specifically for seniors, would I need to supplement it if I give it to my young TB?

I don't see why you would have to. He'll probably do well on it. I would be inclined to pick the feed that's lower in NSC's. I don't consider Boy a senior horse (he's 12) and I have him on Triple Crown Senior (NSC 11%) and he's does awesome on it.

Senior feeds are typically higher in fat and forage, but their vitamin and mineral profiles are usually identical to non-senior. You shouldn't have to supplement.
