Need some input about giving Strangles IM I have to give this vaccine before moving my horse on the 1st. My vet recommends the horse get a titer before giving the IM vaccine to see if he has any immunity. The risk..if the horse has good immunity and I give the vaccine, he could have a serious reaction. I'm wondering what people's experiences have been in giving the IM vaccine and if anyone's horse's have had a reaction?

I used to give the IM vaccine but had too many swollen reactions. So I started using the IN vaccine and have not had an issues since!

Are you refering to swelling at the injection site, or something more? Thx

Yep, the injection site. I started giving them in the rear end because of the stiffness and swelling in the neck. Then I vaccinated a gelding about a week before he was having a PPE (not thinking I know) in the rear end and he was lame at the PPE. This was years ago...but the IN vaccine is so much easier and one less needle to give.

Does it have to be IM? I never had any reactions in my own horses but most of the vets around here have switched to the IN as there are definitely fewer reactions.

No, it does not have to be IM, but my vet does not offer IN. We gave him the IM today and so far he's okay. Hopefully he won't have a big knot in his neck tomorrow.

Ive never had a reaction. I've heard, inter nasal is a better way to vaccinate for Strangles. I don't vaccinate for strangles until my horse is 3 or younger...

Odd your vet doesn't do the inter nasal, that's the one my Vet recommends. So I have no experience with the IM version of the vaccine. I hear there are less reactions all around with the IN, but I'm not a Vet.
