I'm going to audit one of his clinics in April and he's agreed to come over afterwards to see about Eagle if I agree with his principles. He's a cowboy type (my favorite types of trainers) and was wondering if anyone has ridden with him or had any experience with him. Just read an article about him in Equine Times which picqued my interest a little.

Oh how wonderful for you and Eagle.... I have been wishing for some one to come along to help you with Eagle! I don't know Jerry Munn..... seems I remember Munn Performance Horses. I didn't catch the story in the ET. I will have to look it up! Vida I was thinking about you. I signed up for my old trainer's clinic this morning and was wondering if you wanted to sign up Eagle or just audit.. It would be a trip up to Traverse City, but Tom's training is so much like all the training you share with the rest of us on the BB. I know you would enjoy it! It's an invite.... don't have a date yet but the end of May, first of June. I signed Red and I up in the clinic...... He helped Red sooooooo much. If it doesn't work out with Jerry, think about it for Tom's clinic. Also, my girlfriend says she thinks she doesn't have her mare's back up enough and things that this is the problem with the chubby belly... She couldn't believe all the wonderful helpful people on this board!!! Thanks Kat and Vida!! You guys are great!

Just spoke to a friend that had her horse with the Munn guy for a year. Apparently he's a little more cowboy than I thought and she said her horse was laid down at least a dozen times. Regardless, I'll go along the the clinic and see what's up.
How far is Traverse City?
Keep us posted on how your friend does.

Traverse City is about 3 hours north of Grand Rapids.... I think you would be very impressed with my trainer. He gives you things you can do with your horse at home. When he came to my house and worked with me, he would give me simple assignments to do with Red. Two years ago Red was in his clinic and people were terrified of him in the round pen. He is not a mean horse nor did he show aggression.... Red is just a lot of horse and energy, but it frightened people. My current eventing trainer is impressed with Red that she asked me to let her know when Tom has a clinic. Two years later of working Red, kids are leading him to and from the pasture. I don't let anyone else ride him. You would think he was a QH! Tonight Red and I had a great jumping and playing in the arena day. I believe Red and Eagle are kindred spirits... Just watching would be benificial to help you with Eagle. Eagle sounds like an honest and willing horse....and also just a lot of horse. I have read your postings on the bb and agree with your opinions helping others. I believe you would enjoy the clinic. Tom was trained by Ray Hunt and worked with Tom Dorrance. He was an instructor for a number of years at the University of Wisconsin (12 ? I am guessing). He worked for Jack Brainard and now Peter Phinney... If you know western trainers, you should recognize these names.

Vida, Jack Brainard with Peter Phinny has a book out also on Western Training. It is out of print, but I picked up a copy on Ebay. You could rifle through the book to see if this is the type of training you want to put on Eagle. Also in 3 years, I have never seen Tom lay a horse down. I have not read any of the Dorrance books (because I had Tom helping me) and have been told that they can be hard reads. Also, Phinney owns 2 of the top 10 reining stallions in the nation. He has very good trainers working for him. Here is a press release from a couple of years ago: www.reining-horses.com/futurity_press.html
