I had an impromptu lesson last night since I hadn't ridden since last Sunday. I was planning on just riding by myself, but they were having a jumping lesson so I joined in. The weather had gotten upto 4C from -40 with windchill. One girl was on her TB mare that she hadn't ridden for a couple of weeks and the other was on her Holsteiner mare. Our 'crazy' TBs cantered around like happy lil troopers, but the warmblood mare bucked, bolted and generally was acting quite p'od. :-= I think Jiggs just was just completely bored out of his gourd from doing nothing for a week and was happy doing *something*. He even walked right up to the paddock gate from waaaaay back when I called him. Usually he only walks a few steps and then waits for me to collect him :-=
I really needed that pick-me-up that only time in a saddle can provide.

Boy do I know all to well what you are talking about! I just told my trainer the other day that I have been in SOME kind of funk lately. I really think it's because I haven't been able to get out and ride. I'm dying to get back in the saddle. Only kicker is once all this crap melts, my trainer is going to put 30 days on Tango for me, so I won't want to ride him unsupervised for fear of un-doing anything she's currently working on. Luckily, she's going to let me ride her OTTB in the interim.
Your lesson sure sounded like a good time...they sure can be fun and entertaining when they want too, huh?

You know,it's funny about TBs though...they actually have a pretty good work ethic when you can "find" it! They WANT to do things and go places and see stuff...it's just that sometimes they get a little exhuberant! But as you discovered today, the TBs were the ones happy to be having a lesson..and the warmblood was just plain grouchy about it! He must have gotten too used to his new life of leisure!

Amy: aww.. that's no fun if you can't ride. Is there any other horses you can ride while your trainer is training?
Smay: I suppose that explains it nicely. I think he really wanted to work, plus I was asking him to do something he likes, jumping, instead of icky ol flat work :-= The WB has become quite grumpy over the past month. I'm not sure what's bothering her. She was also quite spoilt when the girl who owns her now bought her, which might account for her resistance to work.

HelenD: Yeah, I'm going to ride my trainer's OTTB a few times. She'll actually be a pretty good tune up for me before I get back on Tango. She's much further along in her training but she can be a little persnickity if your aids aren't quiet and consistent. Tango is very similar except that he isn't as hot as her mare. I can hardly wait for her to be finished and she hasn't even started yet. I've been doing really well with bringing Tango along in his training but we've hit a wall that I can't quite get him through.
I'm also trying to work out riding for my former dressage instructor. Even though I'm doing more hunter/jumper these days, she's just looking for someone to take her horses out on a hack or pop them over some cross rails once or twice a week to keep them happy in their job. I have only seen her horses on her website so far but they look like REALLY nice horses and I'm psyched for the opportunity. She hasn't gotten much more into competitive riding and training since I rode with her about 8 years ago and I'm thinking I can learn a thing or two (now THAT's an understatement!)
