I'm reading Year of Wonders, by Geraldine Brooks. She just won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for lifetime achievement, so I thought I'd better check out some of her work. This one is a historical novel about the Plague in England, mid-17th Century. (I know! Of all the recreational reading in all the library...I have to read about the plague. ) She tells a good story and I'm reading it quickly. I'd picked up another of her titles, People of the Book, but only gave it a couple of pages, not just loving the narrator's voice in that one. But this is different. It's based on a real place in Derbyshire--Eyam, also known as the Plague Village. People there largely agreed to isolate themselves to slow spread of the disease. This book imagines what that meant for them, and it's very believable. Anyone else read this one? Bara, ever been to Derbyshire?

No, I have never heard of her or the book, and have never been to Derby!
It sounds fascinating, Ann - I'll look up Eyam - go there and take some pictures for you. I'm sure there will be a museum!
B
ps - because we're weird, Derybyshire is pronounced Darbyshirr. And Derby is Darby.

Fine trivia indeed! Let's suggest Darby as a name for Michelle's baby.

No, no, it's spelled 'Derby'. I DID have problems in Kentucky... Can you spell the English county of 'Wooster'? You'll have to ask an English friend. ClaireLV will know. We're weird, that's why you guys broke away and why Niaru's lot declared war. ;D

No. we can't spell worsterchetershirshire, or whatever. Thus, in Ohio, we have a college named (and spelled) Wooster! Also, we have a town named Bellefontaine, but pronounced Bell Fountain. It's embarassing.
