So BooBoo got yet another booboo while I was on vacation. Very superficial from what I understand, on the hind right. It's been warm and stocked up in the morning and by the evening (after a full day of turnout) it's normal again. I feel like I'm missing something obvious here. I understand why it stocks up overnight in the stall and goes down with movement. The things I would think to do would be bute (which could bring the swelling down, but it's going to do that by evening anyway) or cold hosing (which could bring the swelling down but it's going to do that by evening anyway). Do I just let this run it's course?

If the skin was broken, and the area is warm to the touch, it might be an infection brewing as well as the swelling from the initial bump/trauma. This happened recently here (left hind) and I used DMSO w furacin to treat the area. The heat dissipated within the first day and the swelling is becoming less each day, and goes down within about 15 minutes of getting him out in the morning. If the amount of swelling is increasing, or the 'warm' gets warmer, I would investigate further.

I agree with Rusty's approach to treating BooBoo. It might be best to hold off giving him Bute at this point. At least until or unless he starts to show being in pain. Giving him Bute now would mask any painful response to his booboo.
