Hi my OTTB's hoof walls are weak and the vet put some poultice and wraps on them, shots etc... and suggested I buy a hoof supplement w/biotin. I don't want to pay alot for supplements is there a good place (other than smartpaks) where I can buy them for less money? And any suggestions for supplements or hoof treatments are welcome. Thank You.

I think the company Valley Vet Supply has pretty competitive prices if you have to order. Dover has some good prices but will probably kill you on shipping.
I like Farrier's Formula, used it in the past. We have a boarder whose TB is in the same boat on FF. Grand Hoof and Horseshoer's Secret are popular sellers at the feed store I work at.
I would recommend a supplement with more than just biotin. Biotin is very helpful, but many other vitamins/minerals/proteins etc support healthy hoof growth as well. Look for something that also contains methionine, iodine and zinc. Some have MSM as well.
I like a product called Crossapol for toughening hoof walls. I use it on my guy pretty religiously, especially now that it is dewy at night and dry during the day, which is hard on the hoofies. I think it is a regional product though, but Keratex is pretty common (but expensive). I generally alternate the Crossapol every few days with a hoof conditioner so they don't get too brittle.

oh yah the supplement would have to have more than just biotin in it, definitely. I had almost forgotten about ValleyVet, and Dover does have hefty shipping prices, no thank you. I'll just do some price comparing, I think I'll go with FF or Keratex, thanks for the advice! BTW I've heard some bad things about hoof conditioners, but if it works for you that's great:)

Keratex and Crossapol aren't hoof conditioners per se, but aldehyde formulations that cause the keratin protein fibers in the hoof to bond to one another (polymerize), making the existing horn tissue denser and tougher -- very different action than oil-based hoof dressing. I have used keratex very successfully to improve poor quality hoofs while waiting the many months required for feed supplements to make a difference.

I don't know if you have a Fleet Farm or Farm and Fleet store near you but they sell a couple of good hoof supplements at a very reasonable price. Check any of your farm supply stores, the often sell in bulk at low prices.
