OK, yesterday was the big day that Briana was taken up to the vet clinic for her initial x-rays, etc. Well, the x-rays showed that when she got the puncture wound, it nicked the bone and she has an infection on the bone. This isn't a wound we had neglected or anything, we treated it properly. We kept it open until it stopped draining, we had her on antibiotics and kept it as clean as we could. So today, Briana is having surgery to clean out the infection. Can you guys send some positive thoughts her way? I would really appreciate it. Update - 1:17 pm I just got back from visiting Ms. Briana and she is in fine spirits. She came through the surgery just fine and recovery should be complete. She will still be in the vet clinic until tommorrow and will possibly always have a small lump there but all went well. They did discover the puncture went higher than we initially thought and in fact came very close to an artery in her leg. Now comes the hard part, we have to keep her inside for at least a month and well, let's just say she isn't going to be a happy camper. As my vet told me, this morning Briana was a holy terror when they went to give her needles.

That is the worst of luck for her to get an infection down deep like that Paula. I hope the vets can clean it all up and have her good as new soon!

Oh geez. This isn't a good year for a lot of us, uh?
Good luck to Briana. She's young and robust, like kids, they recover a lot more quickly than adults, right?.

Ouchie! Poor Briana! Sending healing thoughts to Briana, and big hugs to you. I know the last thing you needed was another vet bill, but you always take the best care of your horses. They are lucky to have you!
Hugs, Christi

BTW, this is the wound right after we discovered it. Very innocent looking isn't it? And this is it from last week, after the vet had shaved her leg to see what was going on.

Glad to hear all went well. Poor girl gonna be cooped up for a month. You'd best be ducking the first time you let her out again.

I am glad the surgery went well....that is nice to hear especially when the wound was a bit more compicated then first thought. Keeping her in a month will be a challange for sure! Geez.....that will be fun! LOL I wish ya luck..I am sure with all this horsey smarties on this board we should be able to help you keep her sane and happy for the month (you too! LOL)

That sure was an innocent looking wound at first! I'm always paranoid about the little things and some people try to make me feel stupid for being like that -but this just proves that you have to watch even the innocent looking boo-boos.
I'm glad she made it through like a champ. I'm sure the month of being in will just fly by!
