Beryl has gotten an oozie itchy area under her cheeks, under her belly and also under her tail bone. She has started rubbing her tail out for relieve. The areas under her tail are like flat dry flaky skin which comes off and leaves a sore. The area under her belly is flat dry flaky skin also -she loves it scratched so very itchy. The place under her jowls appears to be the same. From my research I see things like Sweet Itch or girth itch. Any suggestions for a product that will helop get rid of this. She is on a vet assigned worm program and she was checked for worm- doesnt have them. I have started using MEK spray but it doesnt seem to be working. Any ideas?

Mister had sores/dry skin/itchiness from gnats earlier this summer. I used the Bug Balm (it might be Belly Balm now) on his tummy, and it really helped. He had lost patches of hair, had swollen welts, etc and the balm worked wonders. I think Tail Tamer makes it: www.tail-tamer.com/shop/horse-health-supplies/belly-balmI recommend trying it on a non-affected spot first, some horses are sensitive to it. I was really happy with the results, the swelling and sores were gone quickly and hair was growing back inside of a week.

It does sound like an allergic reaction to the bites of gnats, also called No-See-ums and sand flies . This is from my favorite resource, "Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook": It is known as Queensland itch or summer eczema. This info is for you to look into for Beryl's symptoms. It is the most common insect bite allergy in horses.
Once I looked into your description of what is going on with Beryl I recalled my mare having the same issue. She had at one time a scabby, itchy area in her navel area. I found a product by Farnum, as I recall, by the name of "Fly's Off". It is a hand friendly application of a cream in a jar.
