Anyone read this series? I'm almost 1/2 way into the first one and LOVE it!

I read it about 20 years ago. It was a really popular series at the time. I liked the first 2 but thought it lost something after that (though I don't think I read the last one). There was an awful movie adaptation made with Darryl Hannah - skip it.

Just what Elizabeth said. The books are entertaining and I enjoyed them at least 20 year ago. Thirty??! You have to laugh at the heroine's accomplishments, though. I believe she is single-handedly responsible for invention of everything from the wheel to birth control.
When you've finished Auel's series, try Sacagawea, by Anna Lee Waldo. Another hefty saga with an intrepid heroine. I read that one the summer my oldest daughter was born--such a good baby taking all those long naps!

I read all three in the series some years ago, too. I enjoyed the read so much that I can remember most of the story line of each book. Although, the first and third, "Valley of Horses" are foremost in my memories (pun intended) . ;D
I did also see the movie, "Clan of the Cave Bear" with Darryl Hannah. It had a lot in lacking and not very well made. As I recall, I think it was a made for TV movie.

I had no idea there were two more in the series since I read the third one. I'll have to check in to it.

The last one, as far as I know, is The Shelter of Stone, and I read it just after actually visiting the site she's writing about (in the Dordogne region in south western France - amazing sites), so pretty mesmerizing to me. There is supposed to be a next book, but I don't think she's finished it yet...

She has not, my MIL's daughter works for her publisher. I got a nice CD years ago with her talking about how she did her research for the books.

I finished the first one and loved it! Can't wait to start the second. I hate cliffhangers!
