Okay, so long story short, BooBoo cut his leg, had stitches, complications, stitches removed early, spraying with granulizing (sp?) spray and then putting caustic powder on top. Trying to avoid further proud flesh. Vet (never used before-- my vet is on vacay) said he would bring me back some caustic powder but never did. He said most farms have this. I've never used it. We don't have many injuries at our farm. (With the exception of my horse, it seems.) Is this something I can buy at Rite Aid, or do I need to hunt down the vet? He said it forms a crust and is blue. Beyond that I'm not quite sure what the purpose was.

Wonder Dust is what you are looking for. One of those things you should always have on hand

Do you have any lime? The powder you put down in stalls to take away urine stink? You can use that as well. "Old Timer's Secret" as my FIL puts it. I asked my vet about it and he said it does the same thing.

Look up Wonder Dust under the trade name Farnum, Inc. The active ingredients in Wonder Dust are Ag Lime, as Jenarby said and powdered charcoal dust. The charcoal dust makes the dark blue coloring of the product.
Case in Point: I have a friend who bought a horse sight unseen. When said horse arrived at her farm it had about a golf-ball sized mound of proud flesh on it's left front leg just below the knee. We mixed up a concoction of Wonder Dust, liquid Cut-Heal and Nitro-Furazone paste and applied it twice daily with gloved hands. The caustic effects did their job of eating away that horrific mound of proud flesh. Be aware though that now nitro-furazone has now been classified as carcinogenic.

Thanks guys. Vet dropped some off later.
So new question. The vet says remove the "crust" created by the caustic powder everyday twice a day. He made it sound like it would essentially rinse off. I'm having to pick it off. It actually starts bleeding a lot. And I can tell it hurts BooBoo. He throws a fit and doesn't want me to touch it. Am I really supposed to be picking it off?
Will talk to vet on Monday. Thought you all might know.

That scab will wash off with a bit of hose pressure or light rubbing with a sponge (surgical, not bath as you want to throw it away and use fresh). Don't pick at it or he is gonna get really angry with you. It also shouldn't bleed a whole lot.
hate to be gross, but you got a pic of that owie?

Proud flesh has a lot of little blood vessels and will bleed a lot (there are no nerve endings in proud flesh so it shouldn't hurt so much) Maybe there's no proud flesh and you should just be using an antibiotic. For that I would just use some nolvasan ointment and leave it alone.

Talked to vet. He said caustic powder is too aggressive for this stage in the game. I'm going to compare it to wonder dust. Just going to stick to granulizing spray for now. Hoping for the best. Seems to be healing well. Potentially a little bit of proud flesh starting to show, but it's a bit tough to tell right at this moment.
