Just finished reading it and really enjoyed it. I was disappointed to see that it was the first novel of the author because I was hoping to read other books she had written. It is about the messy meshing of a Pakistani Muslim family and an old English family. Funny, sad, and always interesting. By the end you fall in love with Mrs. Ali and Major Pettigrew who are so different but so perfect for each other

Julia, I am just finishing this book. I love it! I do identify with the crotchety old Major, who makes me laugh every time his first reaction is to be grumpily critical, then he notes that a person may have some good intentions or fine qualities after all so Pettigrew feels privately sorry for his initial thoughts, but finally the person behaves so badly that the Major resumes his original cranky view of things. This happens within the course of a single conversation, several times. It just made me chuckle. Which is just what I need. Like you, I want MORE.

I read this book last month, and it was a sweet read. I kind of hope there is a sequel, and the 2 characters have a fun adventure.
