I work part-time at the racetrack up here for a trainer as a hotwalker. I do it for "fun", if you could call it that, I like to be around the horses and I like working for my boss. I got my gelding from one of her owners once he was retired. Anyway, I help them rehome some of the TBs when they are done racing. Last year, I helped find two great homes for two fillies. This year we already have a gelding that needs a home. He is gorgeous, absolutely stunning, 16.3 hands, 5-years-old, moves like a dream. The problem is that he has a bit of a suspensory injury, and isn't sound to race. They want to find him a good home, I think they said FREE to good home. He needs time off, obviously. I don't think he has the mind to jump, plus with a suspensory I would assume that wouldn't be smart. They stopped on him before he got bad, so I am hoping he can become a nice riding horse for someone. I guess I am wondering what would be the best way/words to describe a horse like him to prospective owners. He is a really nice horse, definitely not for beginners, but I think once he got to trust someone, he would be a nice boy.
Thoughts, opinions?

Never out rule what you believe they can do 'mentally'. They change SO much from track life to outside life, you can't ever predict how they will turn out with time off and being brought up in a new life outside the track. Also, with an injury, I'd leave it up to a vet to decide what the horse will be able to do 'physcially' once healed.
I'd simply put it like this: 5yo 16.3hh Thoroughbred retiring from the track due to suspensory issue. Needs time off then will be ready for retraining. (You can also decribe his movement if you've seen it), etc.

I agree with fancy. Vet the people, too, since he is a freebie, so make sure they know how to handle a young off-track TB and won't be just throwing him in a field. But don't tell them he doesn't have a mind for jumping - really that is unknown.
