Random question. BooBoo came in with yet another booboo. Last night he just had a small cut about halfway down his lower leg on the left hind. No problem, cleaned with betadine and put some furazone on it. Today, it's all swollen. Seems like it was stocked up but didn't go down with being turned out all day. He's not off, but it's very ouchy to touch anywhere on the lower leg. I cleaned it again because it was disgusting, put some furazone on a 4x4 and wrapped it lightly with vet wrap. Should I keep doing this? Should I sweat it? If so, what is your sweating procedure of choice? Cold hose? I'm very paranoid about infection... have known two horses with bad cases of cellulitis.

Cold hose, keep it clean, and get some mastitis infusion to put on the cut. Don't bandage it unless he worries it or if he is in mud. To bandage, get thee to wally world, get some appropriately sized surgical dressings (they don't stick like gauze) and wrap with vetwrap. This is the ONLY time you will see me recommend a boot - cover the lot with a light shin boot, the stretchy neopprene kind.

He's getting it covered in shavings and mud, which is why I wrapped it. And I only use teflapads, not gauze.

Sounds like it could be cellulitis. Unfortunately I had my first experience with it last summer. Vet had me cold hosing, ointment (sorry can't remember the name of it) to keep the proud flesh away, smz's and aspirin once a day until the jar was gone. We also would lunge in a pressure wrap after cold hosing and lunged for 5-10 minutes. I kept him in standing wraps/quilts while he was stalled. It took about a week for the edema to clear up and then he would still stock up a little in that leg while he was in. Hope this helps...

You might ask your vet about a diuretic. My mare has recurring cellulitis in one leg. It responds well to antibiotics and the diuretic, which for the life of me I can't remember the name of right now. It's easy to give--a little squirt in the mouth for 3 to 5 days. Great results, and the SMZs clear up the underlying infection.

That's what I was afraid of. Do you think I can give it a few days to see if a round of cold hosing helps or should I just bite the bullet and get the vet out so I can get the SMZs (don't think I have any....) and get rid of it ASAP? Just wondering how soon I need the vet to come out...
Can I just use this opportunity to point out that everyone was all concerned about BooBoo's hind shoes and he's the only one that comes in beat up. He's been there about 6 weeks and has had 5 cuts/scrapes/swollen body parts that required treatment. The instigator is being removed tomorrow. I know herd management is difficult and I don't want to be the high maintenance boarder, but this is getting ridiculous. In 10 years I've never had a problem fitting him into the herd.

Sealy did pretty much the same thing on her back leg. I don't know if she was kicked or what but it happened when she was turned out. I washed and dried and then put on a sweat. I re-applied each day and washed in between. It's going on 4 week and the cut is finally just about gone but it left a bump on the inside of her hind shin. It was deep enough originally that it should have been stitched. However, DH brought her in for me the next morning and didn't see it....when I took her out to ride that afternoon I saw it. By that time it was too late to sew up. Putting a sweat on it will bring down the swelling. She still stocks up a little after being in all day but not like she did in the beginning.

jen, it's been a ridiculously long time since I did a sweat. What's your method?

Furazone (with some dmso mixed in) sheet cotton, plastic wrap, no-bow quilt and standing wrap. I have a cell phone pic of Sealy's leg....uploading it now..... Well I thought I had a close up....The day after cutting the hind leg she came in with a cut on the inside of her front leg as well. If you look closely though you can see her hind leg in this pic with what has been left behind form her cut.

Any other opinions? I'm going to sweat it tonight. If this doesn't work, I guess I'm calling the vet??

I would go ahead and start SMZ's...just as a precaution but talk to your vet first. Boy weighs in around 1175 and he was on 12 smz's twice a day for 10 days along with the aspirin once a day. If it's cellulitis you don't want it to get out of hand. I wouldn't wait any longer.

Need to get the other two fixed. Need to get new tires. Still trying to close on this house. Need appliances for the house. Dog needs thyroid meds. I just keep telling myself that I will spend a lot more money in the long run if I don't nip this now. It's just frustrating that he keeps coming in the with cuts scrapes and bite marks.

Okay... so the sweat helped a lot. (Thanks Jen!) I left it on over night. I put another one on tonight, just for good measure. So what's your opinion? Do I need to keep thinking about cellulitis and getting some SMZs?

SMZ's wouldn't hurt him even if he didn't need them. Plus they are cheap. So if you wanted to cover all your bases, then use them. I typically go with 10 pills twice a day for 10 days.
Some horses just blow up with the slightest little nick. Sealy is that way too.
