Okay so about 3 1/2 weeks ago I was looking my horse over and I found this watery thing on the side of his haunch. I called the vet and she came and said it was Hematoma. She said it would show improvement in 2 weeks. It is almost 4 weeks now and it hasnt improved at all. Has anyone had to deal with this and done something different besides holding hot washcloths on it to make it go away?? Advice would be great

Call your vet again - sometimes you have to drain them....

There was a horse here who recently had one and was told it could clear up on its own, but if not, draining would be needed. I think the concern was that if the fluid wasn't moving or dispersing, it could become infected. After a couple days of no improvement, the vet was back to drain it and the horse was given antibiotics. They had to keep the drainage site clean (special washing), and do hot compresses. Horse recovered fully, but it took 2 weeks after the draining.

Thank you guys. I dont come on here much. The vet did take a look at it when she came back for the spring check ups. She said he was doing fine and that we dont need to do hot compresses or the topicals dressing anymore. I am very happy. He always heals so well

Hema=blood. My mare had one and we had to drain it and then continuously flush it for a week or so. Draining is controversial as it can invite bacteria/infection, but for my mare the hematoma was on her chest and getting in the way of movement so draining was the best bet.
Glad your guy is doing well!
