I used BooBoo in a lesson last night. He did great, as usual. We're going very slowly in bringing him back. I noticed while he was walking that the movement in his stifle was a little.... weird. It wasn't smooth. I walked beside him with my hand on it while he was walking and it seemed like every couple of steps it popped. Is this just because he's out of shape? Do I need to worry? How do I strengthen the stifles specifically?

Lots of slow work, slow jogging, and some jogging uphill if you have hills, walk down though. It probably wouldnt hurt to massage them either, with the linament of your choice, something mild though - remember, it is the rubbing that does the work, not the lubricant, the old timers used water for most rubbing or some home made concoction of vinegar, water and secret ingredients.

My favorite exercise for stifles is closely-spaced, raised cavaletti. The object is to have the horse walk through, and lift and hold the lift in the hind legs. Just a handful of passes on a daily basis really work. And it's great when you don't have hills or can't get outside.

Thanks. I never realized how much I'd miss my hills. I miss the east coast. So it sounds like I shouldn't be too concerned that we're doing too much damage?
