As I mentioned in the "running" thread, I was inspired to start running using this program www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-381--9397-2-1X5-3,00.html
I am by no means fat, but I've steadily gained weight since college... I'd like to lose 20 lbs. That would be ideal. And that would put me at the weight I was after my freshman year of college, which is when I worked my butt off. 10 would be satisfactory.
I also mentioned before that my dog Yogi is a bit over weight.
So here it is: DAY 1
I did everything I could this morning to avoid running. I decided I needed to charge my iPod which was completely dead. That took a while. I decided I should stretch. That took a while. I decided I should have a light breakfast. Then I had to wait for that to digest. Etc etc etc.
I finally got my butt (and Yogi's) out the door. He had no idea what he was in for. We headed out of our neighborhood and towards a park down the road. We had to go over a pedestrian bridge over a major highway. He quivered like a little girl. Then we got started.
Day 1 called for run 1 minute, walk 2 minutes, repeat x10. Well... we got x9. I could have kept going, but Yogi was pooped. The walking was broken up by sniffing, marking new trees and digging in what is left of the snow. But we stuck to the plan pretty well. I'm impressed that I got him to run at all. He has turned into quite the couch potato. I am great. I was a little tired, since my stamina sucks-- always has. But I could have kept going for another half hour. My right knee (which I've always had problems with) is a bit achy. But it's not too bad. I need to buy good running shoes. Then maybe dig out the knee brace.... hopefully I won't need it.
Lesson learned today: Yogi can't go that hard without a break for water. Or shouldn't. Especially since he's got the shepherd coat that's a little thicker. So tomorrow, we're going to drive to a park down the road that has a paved trail where we can run and do laps... essentially, we'll pass by the car several times, so we can stop for water. And there are water fountains too.
Tomorrow calls for 30 minutes of easy walking. I never pictured myself as a runner, but I feel awesome today. Maybe I can get us both in shape!
Thanks for the inspiration!
