Sorry Luci, I don't mean you, but I've loved your dance videos. But 'Wade in the Water' has brought it all back to me. (I don't know why - I'm not QUITE that old!)
But I remember this as a slave song - and wade in the water was a way of throwing the bloodhounds off when you were running away. The other one I remember was 'Follow the Drinking Gourd' - which was basically the Big Dipper and meant keep your eye on the constellation and you'll go north.
They were all about the underground railroad.
