I tried spinning for the first time tonight. OUCH . That seat HURTS! It was a wicked hard workout too. I used to be a runner so my hamstrings are used to abuse but my poor quads are not happy. I can't decide if I'm never going back or going back every day. We'll see how long it takes my butt to forget the pain of sitting on that seat. It's like sitting on the narrow edge of a 2x4.

Diane, I feel ya...my elliptical is kicking my butt right now! I'm up to around fifteen...hopefully I can work my way back up.
Abowls, is spinning ridiculously hard other than the seat? We have classes on campus, but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough! I can go for a looong time on a regular bike, but I have a feeling I couldn't keep up with spinning.....

Well I'm pretty out of shape right now. It's a really hard workout. If you bike a lot you may find it a bit easier but I've never heard anyone (even seriously in shape friends) say that it wasn't a great workout for them. However, if you found it too hard you could probably still get through it by cheating just a tiny bit. I did what the instructor said for the first 30 minutes but she loves to make you do hills. In order to do hills there is a little knob which you turn to increase the tension on the pedals. The instructor tells you to "add a gear" and you turn the knob 1/4 turn. After the first 30 minutes I started cheating a little. When she would say "add 4 gears" I would only add 2. If you found it too intense at first you could probably work up to it by cheating a tiny bit at first. I'm going back tonight. It's too good a workout to discount just yet b/c of a little butt pain. My butt still hurts 2 days later but I'm sort of hoping that I'll build up callouses or something ;D. Running is my natural inclination but it seems that since that is always what I have done to lose weight, my body is used to it and it isn't going to work much this time. The last time I got really fit, I dropped the last probably 15# or so when I added yoga. I think it was just something different and I just dropped weight like crazy. This time I'm looking for a good yoga class (I went to one last night that was AWFUL) and going to try spinning as well. I have about 30# to lose this time .

Diane- I shudder to think what I would look like in bike shorts right now but it may come to that .

I'm in the same boat as you, I have about 25# or so to lose. I'm hoping that my elliptical will help, it for sure gives me a good workout, but I'll have to check the times of the spinning classes at the rec. The cheating thing cracks me up, that's so something I would do! I've never tried yoga, I'll have to try that!
I second the padded bike shorts solution! Or a gel seat cover? Ha!
