Hi every one, its been awhile. I have Little problem, i have a mare that has developed mouth sores kind of like canker sores inside the upper gums and above her top teeth ( in the gum line).
I called a vet out, he looked and said, what she has was contracted threw mosquito's, and there is no cure , nor any medicine that will help. not to mention we haven't had mosquito's in 3 or 4 months?
So, i know I'm not a vet, but NO medicine to help for pain , infection, swelling or something?
He says it will go away.
Does anyone know ? is he wright or do i need a second opinion?.
She is eating still, but, my god i feel HELPLESS here. Do you guys know anything about this. any information would be great!!!

Is it possible she came into contact with something in the hay? foxtail or cheat grass can cause sores.
A horse here gets hives, and sometimes in her mouth. They treat her with an oral med for the hives, but the owner rinses her mouth with salt water daily using a syringe to prevent the sores from becoming infected. Same horse also cracked a tooth and they did the salt water thing then too.
I thought there was some kind of worm/larvae that can cause sores in mouth, nose and eyes (around mucous membranes) and that the situation was treatable with an ivermectin dewormer. Maybe "summer sores?"
I'm sure you're monitoring the situation. If it seems like it's getting worse instead of better, I'd call the vet back and ask for more details about what to expect while this mosquito transmitted self-limiting condition runs its course.
Jingles for a speedy recovery!

My horse had mouth ulcers and we suspected he had eaten something in the field- buttercups perhaps. I rinsed his mouth out twice daily with 120cc of salt water on each side. Cleared it right up.
