A belated goodbye to our big guy "Oatis," who we only owned for one year, but had great hopes for. Oatis was put down August 17 after struggling with a vicious case of EPM that left him unable to walk or stand safely even in his stall. Only two months earlier he had won his first blue and red ribbons at a horse show with Caroline. Caroline had just gotten accustomed to riding a large 16.3 hand horse, and was preparing to take her C-1 Pony Club rating on him when he became ill with the EPM. He was a very sweet and loveable big guy and it will be hard to replace him!

I agree Claire. He was just lovely SMay and what an interesting color. I don't see many TBs with those almost "bay" chestnut markings on their legs. He looks like he would be a unique character that sort of went the beat of his own drum.

Yes, big ole Oatis had a face only a mother could love, but for some reason, Caroline loves the big-headed, old-fashioned type of TBs...she even likes 'em with a slight Roman nose when she sees those. That picture was last winter when we brought him to a boarding stable with a small indoor so she could start lessoning on him...you can see she was doing a no-stirrup thing there and he was easy to ride without stirrups- pretty smooth. He had to wear hoof boots in front until we could get him shod because he was tenderfooted on the frozen ground they had there... blech. His blue ribbon was in hunt seat equitation, and his red was hunter under saddle.... that was going to be his specialty! He WAS a cool color, a very rich chestnut with these unusual golden eyes and dark red mane and tail.

I remember Oatis and your struggle to save him. He was a beautiful boy. Yes, big ole Oatis had a face only a mother could love, but for some reason, Caroline loves the big-headed, old-fashioned type of TBs...she even likes 'em with a slight Roman nose when she sees those. Oh, so you're saying she'd prefer Zen. ;D
