Jay raced only well enough to break his maiden and let them know he didn't enjoy being a racehorse. He was right off the track and rising 5 in January 2001, when I bought him, gelded him, and brought him home.
Jay was my once in a lifetime horse. I've never ridden a horse with so much TRY. Anything I wanted to do - he tried, never said "no". We trail rode, taught lessons, quadrille, hunter paced, evented, and, lastly, tried dressage.
In 2003, Jay suffered a fractured P3 (coffin bone.) Cornell told me to put him down, but I wanted to try for Jay the way he had always tried for me. Took 2 years, but he did come serviceably sound and we schooled all the way to 3rd level dressage, showed recognized to 2nd with some success!
Jay's weight was always a problem. In August 2009, the weight problem had become so marked, I took Jay back up to Cornell. They said he had Irritable Bowel Disease, which is an immune disorder where the immune system attacks the digestive track. Jay's body could no longer absorb nutrients and he was starving to death. He also almost didn't make it through a really bad colic at Cornell, as well. We tried a high-dose steroid regime, but nothing worked.
On October 3, 2009, Jay was laid to rest up at the top of our pasture to look over our farm and be our guardian angel.
