How bad is a shoulder injury, really??? I know this question should really be asked by a vet, but in the mean time.... Have any of you deblt with a horse with a shoulder injury? This guy flexs sore on his right front shoulder. When he jogs out, he wigs the right front leg and doesn't seem to put 100% weight on that leg at all times. Reason I'm asking. There is this 9yo 17.2hh G at the track. I LOVE HIM and was thinking about rehabing him and maybe bringing him back into the H/J world, whata guys think of the shoulder issue?:

Hmmmm...based on the one shot where you can see his legs he looks like he's got a lot more going on in the lower leg too. I could can be tricky....even if his the lower legs are just tight in the tendons (and his ankles look rough) a shoulder could be any of a number of things. A fracture, OCD, arthritis. You really can't say without films. Even with them it's such a hard thing to take films of. If it were me, I'd try and have a vet take them anyway. If everything else is ok by the vet, I'd turn this guy out and not do anyhting with him for several months. Not everyone can do that though and I know you said turnout is limited by you. You have a lot to think about on this one....good luck!

Jen - I did check out his lower legs and tendons are tight and no fill anywhere. However, the photo makes him legs look horrible! LOL You can tell that he isn't putting 100% weight on that right front leg in the photo, though.
I was thinking the same thing as you, if he had a good prognosis, I'd turn him out. We have places about an hour or so away that I can do that and the board would be around $200, so its not killer!
Why am I soooo attached to this guy! Oh gez, I also agree films need to be taken! Couldn't find the vet after I saw him and hes been on my mind all morning so that why the post!

Depends exactly what's going on....IME a lot of "shoulder" things are actually lower in the leg. He looks pretty over at the knees too - which in and of itself isn't always a big problem, but might be contributing...
If you can get a lameness exam with blocks/films it would probably tell you what you need to know.....not always possible I know. Then you're left with taking a chance...
Hard to tell what to do until you know what you're dealing with...

Rock had a shoulder injury once. We spent over $600 on lower leg Xrays to determine his lower leg was in great shape. That left the shoulder as the culprit. Acupuncture did wonders for him! And the rest of the treatment was time. I would say it was a good 6 months before he was completely sound.
