I purchased Gus as a resale project shortly after his last race in September of 2004. I remember seeing him walking in the paddock before one of his races because he was a very dark bay with a white tail. I told the trainer to let me know when he'd be for sale....I wanted him! It took about 4 months of waiting and bugging the trainer but he was finally mine. Gus was a bucking bronc the first few days he was on the farm. I was thinking "What did I get myself into?" As he always did, he surprised me by settling in quickly and being the quietest, kindest horse I've ever owned. After one week off the track, I took him to his very first hunter pace. In fact, we did three of them, one each weekend after he retired from the racetrack. Gus was agreeable to anything, roads, trails, ditches, water, dogs...you name it, he was cool with it! Gus stayed with me for 4 weeks and then went to his forever home with a lovely eventer. He was her dream horse and never, ever let her down. Sadly, 8 months after he left here, he passed away from a nasty case of colic. Gus holds a special place in my heart. RIP Gus 4/00 - 6/05
