My favorite historical fiction writer (Gillian Bradshaw) has a new book about London circa 1647--civil war, etc. I love the story, but I'm losing track of the factions. Bara, help. Presbyterians were intolerant, I see. Members of Parliament were crooked--of course that's been sorted out for centuries now, right. Everyone exploited the military, and soldiers helped themselves to cattle and women at will, apparently. Does that sound about right? Of course you and I were only children then....

You've caught me out, Ann! I think it's Cromwell and the Jacobite rebellion, Charles I and that shameful execution. But it's not my period - so thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out. Got very interested in Samuel Pepys' Diary a couple of years ago and was planning a modern translation - but it's SO salacious that even I was blushing. Does she mention the Plague and the Great Fire of London? ('65 and '66 - so maybe not.) Those are just two of those dates you learn at school, like Christopher Columbus and the Battle of Hastings.) In your case, maybe, the Boston Tea-Party and your own Civil War. That's it! The extent of my gleanings for that period. I have a vague memory that Guy Fawkes was around that time, too - but you'd have to ask ClaireLV! You're right - it's nice to know that today all religions are tolerant of one another and that all politicians are motivated by altruism. Ha! MTS : Niaru-Claire - we executed our monarch LONG before you guys thought of it ...

I don't think we'll get to the plague and fire. Our spunky heroine is busy publishing seditious pamphlets and deciding which man to love. (I have a warning for her!) Charles is still breathing on page 131, but his enemies are assembling. Cromwell strolled through while I was reading late at night and I should have paid more attention to him. I think he was plainly dressed, having left his iron jacket at home that day.

LOL!
Oh, he would be plainly dressed. Cavaliers and Roundheads : 'Warts and all'. Death to all King Charles spaniels.
I've ordered it, as you know, so I hope our heroine chooses the right chap.
I was, indeed, only a baby in 1647, but I well remember the Cromwellian troops marching down our cobbled street ...
;D
