Help! My lease horse Ralphy has a club foot and short pastern on the right front. He had a hunting accident on it a couple of years ago and was rehabbed slowly. BUT... sometimes he's lame, maybe just for a day or two, but NQR. Would a Smartpak or another type of tendon or foot supplement help? He's retired to light riding now and no jumping. Thanx guys

Has the lameness been localized to that foot?

If the lameness has been localized to the foot with blocks, then you will probably need some radiographs, etc. to see if you should inject coffin joint, etc. or if you need an MRI to see exactly what you are treating (is it arthritis? is it a flexor tendon problem?) before recommendations for therapy can be made.....

Thanx AD. The owner did get radiographs which were negative for fracture and DJD. The US scan was negative. She did not get an MRI secondary to anesthesia concerns. It is my understanding that the injury is the tendon inside the foot.

There might be some corrective shoeing that can be done to take the stress off the tendons a little to help, but those injuries can be really frustrating.....
Yuck.

RATZ-I keep hoping there is a miracle cure or supplement or something to help him that I'm overlooking. He is such a good Boy He did well with aluminum bar shoes this summer, but they were tough on his feet, and they are off for now. ADoc, thanx for your input.

Posting pics on www.horseshoes.com can be useful. If you can put the rads up, even better. Wishing good luck... foot injuries can take a looong, slooow time to heal.

Thanx Melissa, I'm studying this issue in as much depth as I can. As best as I can figure out, this is a shoeing issue at this point. My next call is to Ralphy's farrier who is also a vet and will get more details and discussion with him. Will get x-rays too
