Oz took a chunk out of his nose near where his bridle nose band would go. I fed his supps, went to get a horse cookie out of his supp trash can and in that amount of time he gouged his nose. Poor pony! It's a little swollen today.
He has a flap of skin from where he gouged his nose and I gobbed some Corona on the open wound. It's raining with snow in the forecast and the Corona seemed to hold well from yesterday when I saw him today. It didn't seem quite stitches stuff, but almost. I think it will heal on it's own but . . .
Do I keep with the Corona? Buy some Fura ointment (my fav growing up) or spray on the dry?
Thanks!

I use a lot of mastitis infusion and Udder Butter, depending on how bad the owie is. Minor stuff, I use Udder Butter and bigger stuff that isn't quite vet sized, I use mastitis infusion. Was actually told by a vet to use it on wounds that don't need vet treatment. Doctored Donnie's legs with both and he healed up sound, ugly scar but sound. As far as nose skin goes, that heals pretty clean anyway, just keep it clean and pliable.
And PLEASE keep that white crap on YOUR side of the border.......i already got enough rain, dont need more wet stuff of any description

Thanks Big Tee. No guarantees about that white stuff! We went to Oktoberfest today and I couldn't find my stupid snow scraper and needed it. (It was really pretty, but . . . . it's supposed to be 70. I think their idea of normal is messed up! It's never normal.) Hope you have your mud boots handy ;D

Understand I'm not by any means judging "Corona" ointment as ineffective, but proof be told it never did have a "proof postive" healing agent for me.
What I'd suggest is go buy an aerosol can of Contact Lens Saline/ the human Saline Eye Wash Type. . Flush the wound on Oz's nose with either of the Saline products, stop using the Corona altogether. You'll want to dry up the wound not keep it moist with the lotion/oily meds. I'd about bet money, if I was a betting type those suggestions alone will help his nose heal much faster.
The Saline Eye Washes, even though it is a nose wound will help keep the wound clean of dirt and "crud". Plus, far easier to do than hydro-therapy with a watering hose.

The saline in the eye wash won't send him through the roof?
I've always used Furazone ointment, but for some reason am out and have the Corona. It's definitely not my fav., but what I had on hand. I did like that it put a good thick barrier between the open wound and any dirt and seemed to stick through the rain. (He has a stall and connected paddock that he is free to walk in and out of.) I was hoping that by keeping it free from shavings and dirt I'd have part of the battle won.
Hmmm . . . not sure what to do now.

When Basco pierced his nose-picture a hole that I could put the end of my pinky through- I used the Corona and it worked just fine. He doesn't even have a scar from it.

When Zeus laid his nose open (3.5"x2.5") and fractured his nasal bone, my vet said to clean with saline when it was dirty. The saline is salt-balanced with blood, so it is less irritating than water. If you use saline too frequently, it will slow the healing. We did every day for a couple weeks, then went down to every 2-3 days. She said it didn't really matter what "goop" we used. The Furazone seemed to work pretty well. Good luck!

O.K. thanks. I'll pick some up. It still looks good and the swelling is more generalized now.

Most wounds like that are, well, as we say on the track, a long ways from his heart. The first few days of keeping it clean, and getting something on it seem to be the trick if it is a good sized cut, and often with smaller stuff, getting it cleaned and treated the first day is all that is needed. Donald the Klutz managed a cut in a similar place (don't ask, no clue), cleaned it, treated it and in two days the hide grew back down and all he has is a bit of oddly growing hair to show where he damaged himself.
racetrackrejects - i had a horse do the same thing eons ago. He somehow managed to tie himself to his oat pail with the snap via nostril. No idea how long he had been tied that way, but he never pulled back, just stood until I unhooked his nose. Healed with no treatment in a few days, not even a scar.
