Another novel my daughter insists I read. I'm just into the second chapter and I'm already reading aloud to Bruce, who complains that I get all the fun books while he's slogging through theology. Anyway, has anyone else read this one? Let's see, Amazon says it is a "sprawling, bustling chronicle of smalltown life, with a passel of intriguing characters."

I'll add it to my list! I am currently reading another Louise Erdrich novel (Miracle at Little No Horse), it's my 3rd one, I really enjoy her. And in-between I read "Woman at point zero" by Nawal el Saadawi, which was disturbingly gloomy but I want to read her "God dies by the Nile" where she raises questions about the place of Islam in our societies.

Hmmm... it's sort of Dickensian. Wretched horrible characters and helpless waifs and all. I'm not smiling as much as I read on. Maybe this is Mary's payback for my recommendation of Edgar Sawtelle, but she insists it won't devastate me the way Edgar devastated her. Hmmmm...
