Are there any cheaper (than frontline or advantage) flea meds that actually work? I've tried triforce but it didn't help....

I haven't found anything that works, except what I get from the vet. It's called Vectra and took care of the fleas on the dog and both cats within 12 hours. And I had been using Frontline every month on everyone!!!

Try the Vectra that hfhopper mentioned. Im a tech at a small animal clinic and it new stuff.....but the clients are very impressed with it. Basically, it is the #1 recommend flea treatment at my clinic right now. Some people are still happy with the frontline/advantage/advantix treatments and that is fine if its working. But if its not we have been switching them to the vectra.

You need flea bombs-one for every room-if you don't do it properly I think you just make them mad . If you don't kill them all they just jump back on the dogs. I have been lucky with Advantage this year but they say fleas are building up immunities to the flea product. You probably have to treat the areas outside that your dogs go in as well. You can find products at Lowes for your yard and it really is not that expensive. Last year I used Frontline and it didn't work at all. Also you can turn the AC on in your house (if you can) and make them real cold-they kinda stop hopping all over you then ;D But they go crazy in this heat.

I treated all of the pets with the Vectra and waited 24 hours. Then everybody went in cages to the garage for the day. I washed everything I could (my bedding and pet bedding) in HOT water and dried it in the dryer. I also vacuumed the house, closed all of the windows, and treated all of the carpet and furniture with Mycodex spray that I bought from my vet. And then I left for a few hours too. Got home and vacuumed again. That did the trick. Make sure to throw out your vacuum bag in a sealed plastic bag immediately after sweeping so that they little devils can't crawl out and back into the house. Also make sure to spray around the baseboards and under all furniture. It's a bit of work, but it will take care of the problem.
You have to use the Vectra every 30 days, but it's waterproof and about the same price at Frontline. Also work for ticks.

The best thing I have found for spraying in the house is called Talstar One. I bought mine at Southern States, but found it here: www.domyownpestcontrol.com/talstar-one-p-97.html It is absolutely amazing at killing fleas, and other insects. It is NOT a spray for on the animals. It doesn't stain( I used it on carpet, hardwood and sprayed the couches), has absolutely NO odor, dries fast and is easy to use. It is more expensive, especially since you have to have the sprayer as well( I don't know if a regular sprayer would work), but so worth it. And one bottle dilutes and lasts and lasts. I tried Boric Acid, with no luck, though it did kill the waterbugs(roach lookalikes). Vacuuming carpets with fleas in them will help, just vacuum up some type of flea killing powder before vacumming the fleas! As for fleas on the animals... Washing regularly with flea shampoo helps, as does flea combing(and when you flea comb, have a container of water with dishsoap in it nearby to drop the fleas in). If your animal is sensitive to flea killing stuff, you can wash with dawn dish detergent( I usually put a little conditioner on after washing with dish detergent!). I have put baby oil on small kittens to kill fleas. I didn't at the time, but next time I will try mixing it with some water. It is interesting to wash off, but really does the trick on young kittens that are covered in fleas. I found this article interesting. I especially want to try the diatomaceous earth: www.getridofthings.com/get-rid-of-fleas.htm

Frontline worked great last year, but this year it seems to not have the same effect. How much is that Vectra stuf from the vet?
As far as carpet goes, I use flea powder weekly, seems to work well

Ugh. Fleas.
Frontline worked great for us, both dog (got fleas from the barn) and cat (had fleas when we got her). I didn't have to bomb spray or wash anything. I just put Frontline on the animals. But then we don't have carpet in the house where the pets go, and the pet beds were "treated" by the Frontline on the pets, I guess...

Frontline stopped working for fleas for me too. It works great for ticks still. Advantage was worse than Frontline. I tried Vectra and it only worked on the ticks. I'm my vet's first client that hasn't had good results with Vectra. It works for the ticks and is cheaper than Frontline so I'll use it every 90 days to keep the ticks off (it's much cheaper than Frontline).
I tried Comfortis. It's an oral and really cheap (about $10 a dog). It's safe to use every 3 weeks but usually works for 30 days. I gave it to my dogs at night and fleas were totally gone by am! 2 1/2 weeks later I can't find a single flea on them.
Now for the cats- for some bizarre reason the Frontline seems to be working on them. Go figure!

Frontline has stopped working here, too. I went to the Vet and she sold me a tablet for each of the dogs, but I never thought to ask what the name of the tablets were. It sure worked very well.
We have carpet in all the rooms of the house, but we have bought enough of the floating fake wood flooring to do the entire house. We have finally found someone to help do the installation. Just a matter of getting worked into their schedule.
