In the past years since when I got my mare I've bought fly sprays costing anywhere from $5.00 a bottle to $15.00 a bottle. I've tried concentrates that water is added to dilute the concentrate. The best thing I found that worked for her is the Avon Skin-so-Soft mixed with equal parts of water and Apple Cider Vinegar. The vinegar did nothing to change the color of her coat. Another thing I did sometimes was stand and swat bare handed those dang huge horse flies that hurt like the "devil himself" when they took a bite.. I know I've been bitten many a time myself. Bless her heart, Candy would move herself into position for me to swat a specific place right at the head of the dock of her tail where her tail could not reach.
On the many trail rides we went on I'd snap a small branch from a tree that had a few leaves about the length of a riding crop. Candy knew I wasn't getting it to "spank" her. She knew I was going to help her get biting flies off her. She was/is so trusting and honest. Have I said lately how so very much I Love My Candandy? Truth be known, it's a fact....

I've never heard of the deet thing either. I've used it, too. And frankly I never spray anything near their faces. I'll wipe with a sponge.
I have those saxon fly sheets they have slick shoulder lining and feature the belly flap, which rocks for mares, not so much for well endowed geldings. If you catch my drift...or they do! LOL!
