As some of you may know, I posted awhile back about my concern for my stallion's weight loss. he has also been having a hard time shedding his winter coat and his coat is dull and lifeless as well as having a bad case of what I call dandruff. a friend, who is also a vet tech, recommended I get 2 tubes of wormers and worm him back to back, which I did. I just went to clean his stall and pick out the manure piles. I was curious and looked at his manure very closely and found a few very small worms-they were not white in color but the color like earthworms. does any one know what kind of worm this might be?? I will be putting a call to my vet monday. thanks.

I haven't actually seen botfly larvae, but I do know they are passed in horses' manure in the spring (from botfly eggs laid the previous summer/fall). They are about 2cm long and reddish in colour.

Take a sample to the vet and have it analyzed. I believe that bot fly larvae are the only ones you can see, the rest are passed as eggs in the manure. A fecal sample is the only accurate way to know exactly what you are dealing with.

It most likely is a botfly larvae. If you've ever seen a grub worm they look very similar to the botfly larvae. Their not but about an inch or so long, round and fat for their size.

I would Powerpac that boy and have some bloodwork done to see what's going on with him.

ack , you do not want bot flies in your horse. I would power pack quickly. My father got maure one yr and spread it around our garden, the rabbits we had got bot flies and the bot flie larve ate right out through thier sides, it was the grossest thing I ever saw. we did operate on the rabbits and removed the larve and sewed them back up but it left an impression....
