Hello! I've just taken on a 7yr old, 17.1h TB who suffered a medial malleolar (non-displaced) fracture last August. the fracture healed well; the concern I have for this horse is the long and short collateral ligaments in this area. There was some strain in them but also seem healed (no heat, swelling, etc) He also appears to be sound at the walk , trot, etc. What I'm not sure of is treatment for continued healing. I plan to bring him along slowly by ground driving/long lining(no tight circles) but what else would be helpful? TIA

Just go slow, lots of walking and slow trotting. You can ride to get the miles on him just as long as it is fairly straight lines, and slow

Thanks, Big Tee. I'm just on my way up to the barn to feed but thought I would check for replies. These fractures are not common; it's difficult to find information or experiences from others. My vet looked like a 'deer in the headlights' regarding follow-up rehab.

I'd have an ultrasound done of the area to determine the state of the collateral ligaments before putting him back to work.

I did have a series of x-rays and an ultrasound done Apr.07/09 as well as his teeth and vacs. I don't have an image of the ultrasound but I think I could post the x-rays; who knows-this thread could be helpful to someone else in the future.
