The horses were playing over the stupid wire electric fence on Wednesday and it went down and Cam got cut up pretty badly. He had his shots last year and is not due yet. I am a little worried about Tetnus, do any of you guys know how long it takes for symptoms to show up? Its been 2 days and the cuts are healing as well as possible and he is not showing any signs of being sick. Should I get him his shots early?

You can buy tetanus at most feed stores for like $5 for the shot and just give him that yourself. No need to redo all of the shots.

It would be a good idea to give him the shot early. I did that when Fancy was injured.

Thank you guys. I hate stupid elecrtic wire We don't sell those shots in Canada over the counter but I went to the US today and picked one up. He was a really good boy for it, he barely even flinched. Now I just hope it doesn't get infected. Did I mention I hate electric fencing! One more question, can he have Tetnus again when I do my shots in spring? I usually go and get a 5 in one and give it to him.

I suspect it will be fine for him to have the 5 in one as usual. I am in the same situation when I do my spring shots. My vet comes out and does them and he does give some combo shots. I will ask him about the best thing for Fancy who just had her tenanus boosted when she went to the clinic for her laceration. I'll be doing that in April and will let you know what he tells me.

J and I: The vet was just here and he gave Fancy her combo shot which included tetanus. I told him she had her tetanus boosted just a few months ago and he said it won't hurt her to have it again.

Thank you Julia! I am going to give Cam his set next week and it sure is going to be easier to be able to buy the 5 in one Ohh and to update, Cam finally healed enough to go back to work a couple days ago. He is going to have a few pretty bad scars but we can just say it makes him look tuffer on the track That was one of the worse cuts I've ever dealt with, and for the first 4 weeks it just wouldn't heal. Then I tried something called Well-Horse and it healed it in a little over a week

Did you call the vet? The tetanus they give as preventive for an injury is different than the actual vaccine. The injury shot is tetanus antitoxin and the regular tetanus vaccine is tetanus toxoid.

The shot I gave Cam was the Tetnus Toxoid. I didn't have a vet do it, I just went to the Tractor Supply and bought it. That is how I am probbaly going to do his 5 in 1 as well. It is 200+ to have the shots done with a vet, and 25 to buy it. You know how it goes

Oh, I agree. I give almost all my shots myself too. In the future though, if you run into a situation similar to this, you should at least call the vet. Telephone advice is free and often if there is something special needed such as a shot you can't buy OTC, your vet will sell it to you either at cost or slightly above.
