We've vaccinated for rabies as long as we've kept horses. Rabies is a serious issue in OH (bats, squirrels, racoons, groundhogs etc) and the vaccine is cheap insurance and 100% effective.

Rabies is very unusual in South CA, however I do vaccinate yearly for it!

I never did it until my older daughter went to horse camp.. they had to have it ...
