Hey, everyone! Just thought I would update on the bald patch on Baby's face it looks good and has hair coming back on it. But........now he is loosing hair on his shoulder and a lot of it! I can not get him into the vet until the 20th so I am at a loss of what to do! Before After Now the baldness on his shoulder! And if I was to continue brush him or rubbing there I am sure his shoulder would be completely bare! The skin is really healthy looking, I just don't get it! Thanks for looking! Anyone seen anything like it?

Remind me where this horse came form and what type of situation he was in?
Reason I ask is when I first bought Wyatt he had nasty course hair and he was emaciated. As he got healthier, the hair fell out and was replaced by dark, shiney, soft hair.
I also got a horse off the track several years ago....he would not eat well here. They'd had him on thyroid meds and all kinds of other stuff. Since I couldn't get him to eat grain, he didn't get those meds (I didn't think he needed them anyway). He actually gained weight on grass and hay alone. He left my place and went to Mapleshade's place about a week or so after coming off the track. She said he lost every hair on his body and it grew back in a darker, coppery chestnut with loads of dapples.
So this could very well be that this horse had poor nutrition through a bad diet and his system is just trying get back inline?

I ended up getting my vet to change around her schedule to fit him in on Thursday. He came from an family in Portland, Oregon. He was never raced and there daughter had been riding him for hunter/jumpers the last yr or so. I believe he was not being fed right, so I am in the process of changing his diet. I am hoping that is all it is. I have noticed that he sweats really easy. We have been having freezing temps at night and then it has been in the lower 70's during the day, but I didn't think that would cause him to be sweaty. Thanks for replying!

Because of their high metabolism, TB's typically sweat easier than say a stock breed. I wouldn't worry about that. When it's in the 70's and they have that winter coat, they get very warm and sweat just standing around. That's why many people clip in the winter and blanket.
Remind me what you have wormed him with so far... did you do the Ivermectin yet?

He really doesn't have much of an winter coat! Nope, just the fenbendazole! He will get his feet done tomorrow and then to the vet on Thursday so hopefully things will start turning around for him! I just want him to be happy and healthy, but I know it is going to take time but it is still frustrating and heart breaking to see him like this!

Here's a link to an article from The Horse, outlining possible causes for hair loss. At the very least, your vet should take a blood sample to check for metabolic issues, and a skin scraping. Good luck! www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=11080

Unfortunately, the only horse I've seen with both of these problems was an older Arab gelding ( 17) with Cushings Disease. He would blow patches of fur at inappropriate times of the year and have balding patches for short periods, then grow the fur back in, and it would be longer than usual. He was also heat intolerant and I mean sweating in winter, and absolutely overheated in summer... had to be full body clipped.
