I hate breakfast. I really do, and rarely eat right after I wake up. I usually have a cup of coffee right away and then don't eat for 3-4 hours. The problem is that I am dragging by mid-afternoon. I know that it is due to my eating habits, but cannot seem to make myself eat solid foods early in the morning.
As a substitute, does anyone have some good breakfast shake recipes. I would like to add protein to get myself going, and stay low on sugar and calories. Good taste is a necessity.

This isn't really a recipe, but it's a great breakfast or lunch shake. Whey protein powder in light soy milk. There are various flavors. The brand I use is Biochem. I like the natural flavor and if I want more flavor, I just add some pineapple juice. I mix it in a drink mixer so it's quite frothy and light.

Smoothies? No recipe, just some good yogurt and fresh or frozen fruit--I like the whole milk yogurt instead of the lowfat stuff, especially if you want flavor. Buy the big containers instead of the overpackaged little cup servings. You could toss in health foodie extras, but really there's protein in the dairy product and good stuff in the fruit. Have that with your coffee and a slice of whole wheat toast, and you'll make it until lunch time!

I love blueberries. Smoothies are great, too. There will be a lot of recipes online. As for yogurt drinks I like the Indian Lassi (pronounced lussie). To make a quickie version at home, just put plain yogurt and a little water in a drink mixer. Then add salt (never tried that but it's also traditional) or sugar (I use it but it negates some of the benefits of the yogurt). You can put mango juice or pineapple juice in it instead of the water. It tastes great but it doesn't have the protein punch that the whey + soy prrotein has. Hey Adcooper, you know that Cranberry recipe you posted. I meant to ask - but didn't get around to it - if that sweetner changes the ph of the cranberry juice like suger would. I wasn't familiar with the sweetner you used.

MMM, these all sound great. I have to go grocery shopping tomorrow and am going to pick up some stuff then... will probably start with yogurt (mixed with mango juice sounds delicious) and see how that does. Hubby used to weight lift, so he knows a bunch of whey shake recipes (now he tells me, lol) but am a little worried that I might not be "active" enough for the whey... I am on my feet, but not running or anything like that.

coyote, I don't know about the sweetener affecting ph. I just like the stuff! It may not have the benefits of straight cranberry juice, but at least it doesn't have as much refined sugar, or so I was thinking.
seeuatx, this thread made me think about smoothies and I've been drinking them all week! I like frozen peaches and cherries with my yogurt.

Adcooper, it looks like a very, very tasty recipe - right up my alley. I like the plain well enough, but it's better to me with a little sweetner.

www.smoothieweb.com/allrecipes.com/Recipes/Drinks/Smoothies/Main.aspxI have never enjoyed eating breakfast, infact, it actually makes me sick to my stomach. I recently found out I was pregnant and my husband said I didn't have a choice, that I was going to eat some type of breakfast whether I liked it or not. I decided that something like a shake or smoothie would go down the easiest and be a wonderful replacement for my lack of coffee now, so I found the above websites. There are tons of recipes for smoothies (even breakfast smoothies) and you can find just about anything you may be in the mood for. (They even have diet smoothies for the ladies who are looking to enjoy the taste while losing the weight!) Personally, I'm moving basically right down the road from a walmart, and I can't wait to experiment with different flavors when I'll have quick access to the ingredients! For the morning times, if youre rushed, i'd go ahead and gather the ingredients and cut the fruits or whatever you may need to do the night before so it will be ready to throw in the blender in the morning. Hope this helped.

I'm usually in a hurry in the morning, so all I have is a cup of coffee at 6:30-7 am. I'm fine til lunch (11:30 or noon). But if I get hungry mid-morning I 'll eat a Yoplait light yogurt, preferably the raspberry kind, yum. I've noticed that if I only drink coffee I don't get hungry. But if I have some kind of breakfast, then by 10 am I get SO hungry. Those smoothies and yogurt recipes sound so yummy but I'm way too lazy/hurried to make those! I'll make a note of them for those summer week-ends
