A friend of mine just took this horse on trial and he has strange hair loss that she's never seen before. She lives in Oregon, so I haven't seen it first hand. I can see if she can get some closeups of it if possible. I believe she's going to have the vet out as he's under weight and also has a pretty good parasite load. Just thought maybe some of you have seen this before. She says there's no hair on it at all not even fuzz and it's not flakey, though I think it looks a little flakey in the picture. mta: apparently it's only on his face and no where else on him.

I've not seen anything to that extent. Seems to be in the halter area, did his halter fit or was it washed w/anything he could have had a reaction to?
If he has other concerns, a visit from the vet might reveal something underlying.
He has a kind face, though to me his eye is a little sad.

I don't know, could it be from a halter? It looks to big of an area though. Can a horse get rainrot on their face?

To me, it just looks like scarring. Maybe a halter, or maybe a run-in with something else. If there's no fuzz at this point (skin obviously fully healed), it's probably not going to fill back in with hair. It'll be a little less noticeable when he has his summer coat... Another (remote) possibility is that it's sarcoids... there is a type which is flat and slightly scaley and usually found on the face. But I'm betting on a scar. Goalie: They can get rainrot on their faces, but usually don't unless it's really rampant on the rest of the body.

I think it looks like a too tight halter. below his ear, on his cheek and a bit off his nose... every where a tight halter would be.. and rubbed the hair off

Found out that he had on a neoprene lined halter. Maybe allergic to the neoprene? We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Found out that he had on a neoprene lined halter. Maybe allergic to the neoprene? We'll just have to wait and see I guess. I was going to say exactly that - we had a couple of Appaloosas at my old barn that had a reaction like that to their neoprene-lined halters after they had gotten hot and sweated in them. You also had to keep their nylon halters scrupulously clean, or they would get irritated skin underneath.

It very well could be from the neoprene-lined halter. With the sweating underneath the neoprene it could be either an allergic reaction or something similar to "hotspots". At first I thought maybe it was a fungal thing going on, but from the pattern of spots more than likely the halter theory.

Hi everyone! I am the friend of BoyleHeightsKid's that has this guy. Just wanted to add an picture that is close up and clean. And it does show fuzz and some stray long hairs on it. And it is not flaky the stuff you can see on the first picture is actually the cream I had rubbed on it and it was dried with mud! Thank you for the replies! I have been putting an Alvera mixture on it from Farnam, just to keep it moist. Should I be using this or something else?

No I think you are doing the right thing now. I've used zinc oxide to help on hair growth also.

Oh, believe me I have fingers and toes crossed that it will grow back! LoL Got an email from the previous owners and they say the halter they had on him was only a few months old and that he did the same thing last yr with the baldness on the face. They pretty much said it just went away with time. His face does seem to be itchy! Any ideas what I can do to help with that??

Next time you have the vet out for vaccinations or whatever, you could ask him/her to do a skin scraping. Some types of fungus cause hair loss, and there are teeny parasites that can also be a problem.

Teach...would lice cause that?
mta: probably not...then it would be on other places besides the face. I agree with Teach on the skin scraping. Then they can narrow down a treatment to keep it from coming back.
