A horse who is really bothered by blankets being moved around on his back? Ear pinning, tail swishing, face-curling, leadrope biting? Doesn't mind blankets at all, but doesn't like having them put on? Once it's buckled, is sweet again.

My sister's mare has been like that for the 18 years she has owned her! And if you leave the blanket off, the mare shivers at the drop of a hat! So we just ignore the grumpy behavior whilst changing blankets.

I had a horse that would tear them off every night. I do not care what you did to keep them on he some how get them off then would tear them up so they were unfixable even with duct tape and bailing twine. He would do the exact same thing in the pasture as well. Just tear his balnket to shreds. I would get so mad at him because on top of ripping his blanket off he would have the audacity to stand there and shiver. So that made me feel bad and what would I do try another kind of blanket so he would not be cold. When really I think he was setting me up cause sure enough that one would be toren to shreds or in some lucky cases he would just use it as bedding.
I was so infuriated with him and I tired begging and pleading with him and tried to explain over and over that he would not shiver if he just kept the freaking blanket on. Nope he never listened to any of my advice so I gave up and let him go naked cause I could not afford to keep letting him shred blankets. I do not know if they itched him to death or they were annoying and constricting or they made him look to fat or he just plain hated the colors I picked out for him. I tried every blanket and fit there was and every weight cause I feared that perhaps he was getting to hot. Nothing worked.
At any rate perhaps she is just a little annoyed at them, but as long as she is not tearing them off or they are rubbing her some where or in the moring it resembels a suna when you take them off, I would just ignore her for the most part.

Oh, it occurred to me this morning while changing blankets that the mare did get a tad bit less evil when sis got her a lighter blanket-not lighter as in not as warm. But lighter as in a Rambo compared to the heavy canvas thing she had been wearing!

Hootie is very sensitive to any rubbing and weight around his neck and shoulders. He wears a well-fitted Rambo all winter, but LOVES to go naked on warmish days for relief. I think it's just how I feel when I've been in a high-collared coat for days on end - enough, already!
It's possible the mare once wore a blanket that truly didn't fit (pulled on withers when her head was down to graze... belly straps to tight... shoulders restricted... chest rubbed)... she remembers!

Is this Brig? Isn't he being treated for ulcers? I have heard of ulcers causing this kind of behavior, as well as general 'tude about being brushed and touched.

Lily hates her cover being put on and off. She is getting better but used to circle me for half an hour while I would try and get the blessed thing on. We fixed it by doing it in a pen... now she is getting pretty cool about it but will still take a step or do a jump away from the cover coming off.... very painful and tiresome.

Is there any static electricity? I know of one case where the horse was very unhappy taking blankets on and off, but it was because they were getting zapped.

Boy hates having his blanket put on also. He's fine once it's on, but lays his ears and swishes his tail to let me know he would rather go naked! He also does not like to be groomed, especially with the soft horse hair brush. I think it tickles him.
