I've read that copper is good for the hooves, coat, and works to help the coat color, but they never say how much to give, or what is too large of an amount to give. Does anyone here give copper to their horses? How much should be given? [flash=200,200]just seeing what this does[/flash]

Yes, we feed additional copper to our horses because we live in an area known to be deficient. Foals can have horrible joint problems in a copper-deficient area. Our neighbors lost several before the vets were able to identify what was happening. Our copper comes pre-mixed. I pick it up at an ADM mixing plant. They have a vet/nutritionalist in residence that is responsible for developing that particular mix (Challenge Plus). I would suggest calling them--might as well ask someone who really understands this stuff. ADM Animal Health and Nutrition Division--509-924-8833 (PST). If you start asking questions about copper and horses, you will likely be transferred right to the vet. It is a small operation with very friendly people. I am unbelievably lucky to live right near the "factory" so I can pick up my mix in a plain brown wrapper and save $$$$$ over when this is re-packaged by other companies in fancy plastic buckets. I use a human grade mineral vitamin for Tango and my old guy that has copper in it. A while back I had seen a holistic Dr that was dead set on his patients taking a good quality mineral supplement becuase areas of our growing soil is lacking in the minerals it should have so I give it to all my pets and people, aside from my fish. Im not sure how muchthe vitamins I use have in them but i will check the bottle when Im at the barn later and let you know. Vet told me to triple the adult human dose for a horse Tangos size so she gets 3 crushed vities each day. I luck out and get them at a store that runs a buy 1 get 2 free every other month so I stock up and its not all that much for a decent all natarul based vitamin. I do know that for the body to absorb the copper another vitamin is used, I will check and see what that was also I dont remember. I do think that almost all copper supplements have it as an added ingredient anyways thou.

I don't know about copper specifics. In Homeopathy it is recommended that people take a mineral suppl. to boost their immune system (copper, zinc...). The barn I rode at as a student had their horses on zinc one winter when they noticed poor coat condition. I think Linda is right, call someone who really knows this stuff and its use for horses.
