I went to see Luke on Saturday and noticed that he has a crack all the way up his front hoof. What can I do about it? He's not lame or anything, but is it safe to ride him?

I'd ask your farrier. You can get a line up the outside that won't effect the inside of the stronger more integral part of the hoof wall, but I'd ask a farrier before doing any real riding and such. They can do things to stabilize it so it doesn't get worst.

Look at the bottom of Luke's foot. This will tell you if it's just a surface crack or if it goes deeper. Surface cracks are pretty common, especially when there are alternating dry/wet conditions. As Zen said, if it's just a surface crack it's nothing to worry about, but if it goes deeper, you farrier will have to help you prevent it from becoming a problem. Usually for a deep crack, shoes are in order until it grows out. Your best bet is to ask your farrier the next time he is out.
