I'm still persevering with the trimming ;D I did Fancy tonight and boy what a difference it makes to work on a mature horse with good manners! Fancy was a doll. I could put her foot on the stand and turn away to grab a tool and SHE WOULD LEAVE IT THERE! Bless her! Plus I could rasp two handed and not have to keep ahold of her foot and that makes it much easier. I still have to perfect my rasping technique - I can't do it the way a farrier does and I think it is partly technique and partly strength - but I get it done. I picked a good time of the year to start this because Fancy was at 5 weeks and she didn't need a whole lot done. Anyway she trotted off happily too and if she is happy - I'm happy ;D
Indy is next and then Argo. Chocolate needs to be done too but he has a lot of trouble balancing on 3 legs and he has basically self trimmed for the last few years. (He fell down once with the farrier and it was awful.) His feet get long but then just break off and he never looks sore, so I'm debating whether I should just leave him alone. He is very active so he wears them down by himself. It is not bad manners - he is just mortally afraid of falling and hurting himself or someone! It is the same reason he doesn't like to go into a stall.
So do you guys think I should just leave him alone seeing as he seems comfortable? His feet don't look pretty, but they seem to work.

You know Chocolate better than anyone else julia, and if he's not lame and does wear them down enough out and about, who cares if they are a little ragged. I'm very bias here as Chocolate is one of my all time favorite horses. So I would say if he's happy and secure, just keep an eye on him.
