So I finally was able to get the BO to switch Saint to pellets. How long after he is totally switched do you think I would notice a possible change in his energy level?

My first question would be: what pellets did you switch him too? Some pellets can have just as much available starch as sweet feeds.
Otherwise, I'd say you should start seeing a difference in 10-14 days.

I will check the bag tonight to double check the ingredients. He was on a 10/10 SF before. He gets 3 lbs of pellets (sf before) and 1 lb of Omega bran twice a day, plus beet pulp each evening. I haven't wanted to adjust the amounts too much because he is finally looking good weightwise, and I don't want him to lose any, especially going into winter. The bran has been the lifesaver in putting on the weight. I'm hoping to be able to give up the beet pulp at some point.

How can you tell what the available starches are?

Check the website for each brand. If the NSC level is not there you may have to call the feed rep in your area to find out.

Just when I think I'm understanding and on to something...
I don't want to be switching him back and forth, so we'll try this for a while and see how it goes.
Other option might be to use the senior feed pellets. I'll call the guru at the feed store and see what he says.
I might just have to get used to the fact that I have a 10 year old who thinks he's 2.
Thanks for the help!
