Blue colicked a couple of weeks ago. He was that way for three days. We didn't think he was going to make it. The vet came out everyday for a week, with all of her oil and RX and whatever else she gave him.
He had beaten himself up pretty badly with the thrashing and rolling. There were only a couple spots that cut through the skin however. Most of it was where he had rubbed off his hair.
He had what appeared to be slices on both sides of him between the hip point and flank. That hair came off on big long sections.
then he developed small scabbing on inside of his elbow and rear haunches. They are the size of a pin head. If you run your fingernail over it they come off, it flakes and it pulls hair off with it. It is spreading. Husband says it is because he was so sick, kinda like fever blisters. I have washed him a couple times with a fungal shampoo. which he told me not to do anymore. Vet is coming back, but not until the end of the month to do a tubal worming (my request) He is wormed regularly with a paste, but after the colic I thought it might be a good idea. I have discontinued equispot fly drops, I am trying not to spray him with any pesticide right now, because he is getting balder by the minute. I am worried, I am kinda mad at the vet, and kind mad at hubby because no one seems to think it is a big deal. they do not see the new spots everyday. I am afraid he is going to lose all of his hair. The rest of his coat is very dull, and his mane is dull and scalp is scaley. Any ideas what to do?

What else did the vet give him, besides the oil? I've seen horse have skin issues/hair loss due to IV DMSO.

I'll be honest. I do not know what all my vet gave him. I was so upset the first night. I know he had a LOT of Banamine. She tranqed him to get the oil down him. She gave him some more an hour or two later. She came back the next day and gave more oil after a tranq. He was on banamine for the three days. I don't know if she gave him anything else.
I can try to post a picture, but I don't think it is going to show too much, the scabs are so small. You really have to look to see them, you can feel them when you run your hand over him. and you can see what looks like very small dander with hair coming out. It is almost like he is shedding. It does feel like heat rash (on a person somewhat) very BAD heat rash. I will try to get a pic tonight.
I just don't want to aggravate it.
Over all he is in good spirits and back to his normal self.

It's possible he picked up a fungal crud because his immune system was so compromised. I'd try a bath with Malaseb shampoo (you can pick it up from your vet, or any other). Follow directions on label.

Could be just as simple as being vitamin deficient during the colic causing the irregular hair loss. Especially as it's the time of year they start shedding the summer coat. In anyway, ask your vet's opinion and don't panic.
