called me yesterday offering to come out for free and evaluate my feeding program. Now I now he works for Purina and will be pushing their feeds, but I'm curious if there are any direct questions I should ask him. What would any of you ask him?

How they handle their recalls Purina is the one grain I won't touch. Around here it's shoved down your throat by the sales reps and one or two other people. The more they push the more I won't touch it. But there was a voluntary recall a few months ago. Purina contacted the dealers, but no word out to the people directly. You had to call them and ask about it, and they would be surprised that you knew.

I'd be interested to see what he says about the fiber needs of your herd. Also, question him about fat and available starch content of various feeds/grains. TB's don'tgenerally need a lot of available starch (think little kid hyped up on sugar), but fat and fiber are big needs, IMHO.
I've found that some nutritionists are very well rounded in their thoughts, while others can't seem to get past what their company sells. I always get nervous when they start pumping up the grain rations (regardless of what kind of grain it is) and don't address fiber rations.

We have an owner who has an Equine Nutritionist come down and fix up her horse's feed. Its full of soooooooooooooooooooooo much crap, I can't even begin:
Whole Oats Rice Brand Soy Bean Cracked Corn Carrots Vinigar Gluecosmine/msm A-Z vitamins Some other powder stuff I have no idea what it is
Its insane how much time we spend putting all this together and of course their is a certain amount of each, oh and only Timothy hay
To top it off she was giving this horse a total of 6 pounds AM and 6 pounds PM of all this stuff to a horse who did nothing but "halter". We cut and sucker more then half, he was as fat as a cow, and this horse is under 15hh!

Ask him/her about this Wellsolve stuff. I need to know why a puffed up pellet costs $25 a bag. My feed store recently stopped carrying Buckeye products altogether, and now I have only Purina to choose from for my airferns and Insulin Resistant ponies! I am using this Wellsolve W/C ( weight control) and L/C (low carb) products, but they are so expensive it isn't even funny. They are pellets. The horses DO like the taste really well.

Is it a DVM/nutritionist that is sponsored by Purina or someone that actually works for Purina primarily?
I sometimes go out and speak to vets about drugs and am sponsored by different drug companies, but they don't control what I say and am OK if I recommend a drug other than theirs....

He is a DVM/Nutrionist who is associated with Purina. That is the name of the company he gave when he called. He had gotten my name and number from the local feed mill that I get my feed from.

He was probably hoping you were a boarding barn... so bigger sales following his visit. Are you going to try to contact him?

He was at my barn bright and early and it was interesting to say the least. He weighed my hay and looked at my feeding program. In his opinion I don't have to change a thing as the ratio I have in everything is working for my herd. All the boys body scored well, no one was too fat or too skinny.
He doesn't understand either why the Wellsolve is so expensive S.May. it doesn't make sense to him either. So it was a good way to spend the morning. He did feel that Purina dropped the ball on the last recall of feeds and hopes that they have learned from this.

I had a feeling he would say your feeding program was a-ok. Your boys always look so good!
