Ok so I hit 40. Doc put me on some med for awhile that made me gain 20lbs. problem is it is right in the middle. I ride 2 horses 4-5 nights a week. I try to swim at least 3 times a week.
I have two kids/4horses/2dogs/3cats.....outta time.
I need to get rid of this gut. I feel preg.
off med now so i am hoping that will help, but now I feel better and don't want to look like this(I really didn't care before)
anything you can think of diet wise...besides starving. I try to eat healthy. It just seems not to be going anywhere.
thanks for any suggestions! Holly

While I'm not near 40 yet, I can definitely relate to not having the time to do all you'd like for your own personal goals. Funny how life gets in the way, eh?! Do you feel comfortable telling me what kind of meds you were on? That could maybe help me out in figuring what side-effects are expected with certain drugs (i.e. weight gain/decreased metabolism/etc.). Depending on what type of riding you're doing, you're probably getting in some cardio and leg-strengthening exercises that way. The swimming 3x/week is GREAT!!!! If you can somehow also include resistance training (= using hand weights) at least once a week-but 3x would be better- then you'd also be allowing your metabolism to go up. I'm sure you already know this, but weight training increases your muscle mass (duh!) which will allow you to burn more calories even in a resting state. So the more resistance training you're able to incorporate, the better in the long run! I keep a 5-lb. and a 10-lb. set of weights in my room, and (don't laugh) a 5-lb. weight in my car to do little things here and there when I have the time. So a few tricep kickbacks while at a red light ultimately help me over time. As far as your diet.... I can't say this enough to everyone I talk to.... water, water, water, water, water!!! Everytime you're hungry, drink a BIG glass of water. Sometimes if you're in a snacking mood, it's really your body desiring water but we confuse it for hunger. Other times, we really do need to eat....so drink water first then eat your meal. If you can break your meals down into 6 mini-meals throughout the day, then you'll feel a lot better AND keep that metabolism going as well. Here's an example, and I'm more than willing to give you LOTS more info on what foods to eat if you want. Just let me know! Example: 7am Water, Coffee, Whole Wheat/Grain Toast with Scrambled Egg (I use egg whites only b/c of the protein and no cholesterol.) 10am Water, Apple Slices with Natural Peanut Butter 12:30pm Water, Skim Milk/100% Juice, Sandwich or Pita of Veggies/Oven-Roasted Turkey (I don't eat meat anymore, but NEVER eat ham/bacon if you're concerned with your weight. Never!!!!!) 3pm Water, Coffee again if you're addicted like I am, those 100-calorie Snack Paks are GREAT! OR...a bunch of carrots OR....cottage cheese with pineapple (Just read your labels, and be diligent with your fat-content in your choices.) 6pm Water, Dinner: choose healthfully and COOK healthfully!!! Try and use olive oil most of the time. Chicken breast/Grilled Fish/Roasted Turkey.... And add some brown/whole grain rice and a nice veggie (I LOVE asparagus!) 8:30pm Water (get the picture?!), a good time for those sweet-tooth cravings: 100-calorie snack pack OR Sugar-Free Pudding OR a flavored protein shake. (I have a few really good ones I use if you're interested.) I hope this helps a bit, Holly....I may be covering too broad of an idea here for you. If you still have more questions and/or concerns, please don't hesitate for a second to let me know!!! (You're in Ohio too...as is Kim. Interested in a weekend get-together sometime for a fun-filled weekend of working out??)

depression/ anxiety
I had a personal trama and needed some help getting over it.
Now I am Just FAT ;D
Sounds great about a get together! Anytime...escape for awhile always sounds good!
about those weights...I guess muck/water buckets don't count eh? My arms and legs are hard. My belly is the worst.
I don't drink enough water.....coffee addict. I am not a big meat eater and very rarely and processed meat. everything else I am good on.
I do sit on my butt at work all day....so maybe i will bring in the little weights.
Where are you at in Ohio? I tried to use the map feature to see if anyone was close, but it really didn't work too well. I am just south of grove city, ohio. a suburb of columbus.

I was on Lexapro a couple of years ago, and I definitely saw the side effects of it via weight gain, so I feel ya there. Stupid pharmaceutical companies!! And while one cannot spot reduce fatty areas, an all-around good weight training program combined with a healthy diet will eventually help you to see results in the belly area. My problem area has always been my hips/thighs. Definitely jump onto the Water Bandwagon...I think that'll help you a bit. And since you're not a big meat-eater...just be certain to get lots of protein (beans, beans, beans, egg whites, tofu...) and lots of good veggies and fruits. THEN the filler crap that we all just crave and adore (me especially!!!). I'm actually in a 'burb south of Indianpolis...Kim's the one in Ohio. Columbus is maybe 2 to 2 1/2 hours from here: straight out I-70. Not that far at all. Let's corral some ERs together for something soon....SERIOUSLY!!!! I actually just taught a kicka$$ Cardio Kickbox class this morning....I'm basically crippled right now!!! hahaha Especially after my riding lesson tonight...my inner thighs are honest-to-goodness toast!! Oh...one more thing... at your job are you able to take in a stability ball? I found that when I had a desk job and used a stability ball as much as possible as a replacement for my chair, I felt results in my core. By balancing on the ball at work, you're engaging your core (abs, obliques, back) through balance and good posture WAY more than you would in a regular ol' desk chair. Just a thought!! And who knows...it may catch on with others at work (it did at my job!). I'm rooting for ya!! What else ya got?!

Pilates! I'm now part of the 40 crowd (GASP!) and I think Pilates does wonders for that "gut" we seem to develop with age, even when not on meds.
I just did an hour class of Ashtanga Yoga...man that is a KILLER!
I think any exercise that gets you to use your core muscles would do the trick.
I've always wondered, also, about all those "trimming" gels and creams...hmmmm....
MTA - my sister is an MD and says that too much water intake can actually be harmful...which is why I switched to 2 glasses of (good) red wine every night ;D

Definitely too much water can be harmful....but you'd have to have an awful lot to make your electrolyte levels obsolete (like being 'drunk on water'). IF you are quite active in your everyday regimen, then (believe it or not) you should be drinking 1 liter of water per 30 pounds of body weight. (I'm not sure what that is in drams, stones, or hundredweights!!! ) But even if you're not an active-active individual, then the FDA's recommendation of eight 8oz. glasses of water per day is safe!

Sarah, I'm on lexapro - or the generic version of it. The weight gain was really sucky, but somehow, I've lost it all. Right now, I'm at 5'7" and 135 lbs, but I'm terrified I'm going to gain weight. I'm up for an exracers weekend! July would be good, I'll have more funds for traveling hopefully. And water is definitely a good thing!

Oh my, this means I would have to drink FOUR LITERS a day? No way! I can't even bring myself to drink the 8 big glasses that are recommended. I drink when I'm thirsty, basically...and I am active, but I rarely drink more than 1 liter a day...must have been a camel in a previous life?

I hear ya.....technically I'm right under 5L a day!!! It's preposterous, honestly!!! There are some weeks when I actually do get in 4-5L, but usually I'm around 2 to 3. And, of course, then I'm running to the bathroom constantly!!! Personally I keep a nalgene bottle filled with water with me where ever I go. So if I'm in Target/at the barn/at work/etc., I always have at my fingertips. I am a boredom eater...so if I have my water with me, I'll usually turn to it first.
